Liz Gower (Senior Tutor)

Liz has a First Class Honours Bachelors degree from the LSE and has been teaching since graduation. Her specialty is prose and poetry analysis as well as creative writing. However, she is also a believer in the necessity of accurate grammatical expression, and believes that this must also be taught explicitly for writers to become fluent users. Her wide-ranging experience makes her ideal for learners from the ages of 8 to 16.
For Latin, Liz prepares absolute beginners towards the ISEB 13+ exams and Independent secondary school entrance examinations. She can also help prepare towards the IGCSE Language papers, and with sufficient notice, can help with the set texts.
She has worked with AMG since 2005, before this working with the HKU SPACE extramural programme, writing and running courses in Pronunciation, Grammar and English for IELTS.

Becky Clayton (Senior Tutor)
Tutor of English Literature and Language
Graduating with a First Class degree in English from Oxford and an MPhil in Renaissance Literature from Cambridge University, Becky has spent over ten years teaching English and imparting her love of Literature to students ranging from kindergarten to university and degree-level in Hong Kong, Europe and the USA.

Learning and teaching yoga in India to both children and adults, she has travelled widely, and brings her passion for art, culture and empathic understanding into the classroom and studio, engaging her students’ sense of curiosity, wonder and play. As an English reviewer for over fifteen years, she has strong communication and organisational skills, while her pursuit of visual art, photography and writing allows her to find creative expression and connect with and inspire others. Believing in educating and edifying the whole person, she brings compassion and integrity to all her work and endeavours. Becky is not new to either HK or AMG. This is her third stint tutoring with us and we welcome her back, knowing the quality of her teaching and the dedication in her approach.

Deb Debes (Senior Tutor)
Tutor of History and English (Part Time)
Deb has been working with AMG since July 2001, and is an excellent tutor of both English and History. She graduated from Trinity Hall, Cambridge University in 1997 with a BA Honours degree in History, and was admitted as a Master of Arts in 2001. She then gained qualifications as a TEFL teacher. In 2007, Deb completed her Post Graduate Diploma in Education (English) at the University of Hong Kong, gaining the True Light Middle School of Hong Kong prize in Education for best overall results in theoretical and practical aspects of her course. As well as teaching, Deb writes English teaching materials for many publishing houses including support materials for the HKDSE, and runs her own company concerned with animal welfare.

John Quinn (Senior Tutor)
Tutor of English FT
John has been teaching with us since October 2001, helping students meet their goals in English language and literature. He gained a BA in Politics from the University of Liverpool, holds the RSA Certificate in English Language Teaching, and worked after graduation in the Japanese Education system before making his home in Hong Kong over 20 years ago. His particular strengths lie in helping students develop their written expression and building their vocabulary through careful text analysis and comprehension exercises. He prepares students towards the IGCSE, DSE, IB and GCSE AS and A2 examinations. He also helps structure well-formed essays with clear logical links and supports. He is able to help with the types of text analysis used in the SAT, SSAT, and LNAT tests, and he works with students aiming for the IELTS. For younger students, John is completely familiar with the testing structures used by the UK independent secondary schools, and has successfully helped students enter Winchester College, Tonbridge, Eton, Harrow, Wycombe Abbey, Cheltenham Ladies’ College, Benenden, and many other top schools. John also offers guidance towards the interviews for these schools.

Henry Lee (Senior Tutor)

Henry came to AMG in 2014 from the UK, where he has lived his whole life. He has an MA in Romantic and Sentimental Literature from the University of York in the UK and a BA in English Language and Literature from Hertford College, Oxford University.
He is academically very able, gaining excellent A Levels (4 A*, 1A), and 12 A* GCSEs.
Henry is pleasant, well-spoken and is now an integral part of our strong team of English tutors. His lessons are thoughtful and gently delivered and have been very well-received. His wonderful lesson feedback and liaison with the parents of his students leads me to recommend him most highly. He prepares students for their Entrance examinations, for their iGCSE and GCSE’s, for A levels and for the IB Diploma. He also teaches students towards the IELTS examination

Akin Jeje (Senior Tutor)

Mr. Jeje is currently a full-time NET (Native English Teacher) for the Hong Kong Education Board (since 2005), and at his present school since 2009. He is responsible for the creation of reading, writing and oral/speaking lesson resources, as well as language instruction; he also conducts workshops for fellow teachers and students.

Mr. Jeje also earned a TESOL through Global English (based in Exeter, UK) in 2010 and tutored extensively part-time, as an independent tutor and for various language centres. His specialty subjects are English Language, English Literature, History, Poetry and Creative Writing, although he is also qualified to teach Sociology and General Studies.
He is also a published poet of two poetry collections, and numerous individual poems and articles in Hong Kong, Canada and the United States. He was the MC and now one of three directors for Peel Street Poetry, a Hong Kong based English-language poetry collective present in Hong Kong for 13 years. In addition, he performs with its sister group Poetry Outloud Hong Kong. Mr Jeje had served as an advisor and moderator for the Hong Kong International Literary Festival from 2012-2016, and conducts poetry workshops and seminars for secondary schools and NGOs in Hong Kong.

John Clamp (Senior Tutor)

We are delighted to welcome John Clamp to the AMG team. John is an experienced educator, writer, and editor with a diverse background and a passion for language, education, and culture.
With morethan 15 years of teaching experience, John has comprehensive expertise in various fields, including English language and literature instruction, creative and academic writing, critical thinking, and exam preparation, particularly for IELTS (International English Language Testing System).
John has a BA in English Literature with Theatre from Sheffield University, UK, a Postgraduate
Diploma in Journalism from Strathclyde University, Glasgow, and a Postgraduate Certificate of Education from Plymouth University. His career has combined teaching, journalism, and writing. He spent ten years as a columnist and arts editor with Northcliffe Media newspapers and worked for many years as chief academic copywriter for Spinger-Verlag academic publishers. More recently, he has been editorial consultant to clients including the Human-Computer Interaction Games Group at
Waterloo University, Canada, and The Cyprus Interaction Lab (CIL) of the Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts of the Cyprus University of Technology. He was lecturer in English Language and Literature at Rajabhat University, Chiangmai, Thailand, where he was a course designer and public speaking coach.
John has taught students of all age groups up to tertiary level, in a wide variety of cultural contexts.
He worked at EF in Shanghai and Foshan, PRC, and was senior tutor at the Australian Centre for
Education in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. He is a former AQA GCSE examiner in Citizenship in the UK and proficient in a range of languages including French, Portuguese, Thai, and Shan.
